INTERVIEW with Alex Moore.

First of all we would like to know a little more about you. So that the audience has as much information as possible. Who is Alex Moore?
I am a passionate filmmaker. I have written and directed multiple short films and edited some of them. I’m a huge movie buff.

How many years have you been making movies and how did you end up making movies?
I’ve been making films for seven years now. Once I finished a short course at NIDA in 2015 I felt I had the knowledge needed in order for me to make my own projects.

Let's talk about your project. How long did it take from the initial idea to have it ready to be released?
I had the idea for ‘Sky Lights’ when I was on my balcony one night and I saw strange flashing lights in the sky. That’s what inspired me to write the script for the film. The whole process from writing the script to releasing the film on YouTube was about four months.

Can you tell us a bit about the process you've had with ‘Sky Lights’? Is it self-financed or were you able to get financing?
The whole process was both challenging and rewarding and was self financed by me and help from my producer.

No spoilers, but what will the public find in Sky Lights?

The public will find a story about the importance of believing in something that seems impossible.

Have you been inspired by any other film of the same genre?

Yes, Close Encounters of the Third Kind and the science fiction genre has been what most of my projects have been inspired by.

There are many creators who seek inspiration from other artists, literature, music, painting, etc. To create this work have you used references from other arts? If so, what are they?
For this particular project, I drew all my inspiration from films I’ve seen and from what I saw in the sky.

We would also like to know more about your film preferences. We would love to know which directors you like and which are your favorite movies.
There is an endless list of directors I like but my favorites would include: Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott, Denis Villeneuve, Christopher Nolan, Quentin Tarantino, Neill Blomkamp, Sam Mendes, Martin Scorsese, Matt Reeves, Jordan Peele, Jane Campion, Robert Eggers and James Wan.

There are great classics of cinema considered masterpieces, but for us cinema is subjective and we also love films that critics may consider bad. Do you have movies that are not considered masterpieces but that you could watch over and over again without stopping? Which are?

Pirates of the Caribbean: the Curse of the Black Pearl, The first Transformers, Super 8, How to Train Your Dragon, Kung Fu Panda, Black Water, The Reef, Get Out, Locke, Cloverfield, The Blair Witch Project, Paranormal Activity, Spider-Man 2.

Your favorite black and white movie?

Psycho

Have you seen anything by David Fincher? How would you define it in one word?

Yes, I have seen many of Fincher’s films. ‘Fight Club’ is one of my favorites. I would describe it as unpredictable.

Your favorite 2010-2020 movie or series?

This is a tough one, for a movie it would be ‘Inception’ and for a series it would be ‘Game of Thrones’.

Your favorite actor or actress?

This is tough too, Leonardo DiCaprio is my favorite actor and Helena Bonham Carter is my favorite actress.

Changing the subject, one of the concerns of many creators is the lack of financing or opportunities that producers provide. What do you think about this?
I think that producers should take more risks with independent filmmakers and support more unknowns.

A very personal question, but... What are your strong points and weak points?
I would consider my strong points to be communication with my cast and crew while directing and drawing storyboards to know how I’d like the film to look. Rehearsals are also very important with your cast and crew to know what to do when filming commences. For weak points, I’ve had mixed feelings about the characters I’ve created so I’ve been working on making them more interesting recently.

Do you have experience on the festival circuit? As a filmmaker, how do you see film festivals? Where do you think they should improve?
My films have been recognised by a number of festivals and it's all been good experiences. I see film festivals as a good opportunity to showcase independent work and connect creators. I think festivals could provide more opportunity for expanding talent into the industry like what this festival is achieving.

Do you have any other project in mind? Can you advance us something?

Yes, I am working on a sequel to ‘Sky Lights’ that’s starting production soon.

Would you like to add something else?

Although ‘Sky Lights’ is a science fiction story I have directed a short from the horror genre and a spin off short film set in the X Men universe. In the future I hope to direct films from all sorts of genres.
